4 Geometry standards
4.4.1 Point and MultiPoint
A point (class Point) is a O-dimensional geometrie object and represents a single
location in the co ordinate space. A multi point (class MultiPoint) is a O-dimensional
geometry collection (class GeometryCollection). The elements of a multi point are
restricted to points.
4.4.2 Curve and MultiCurve
A curve (class Curve) is single a line string or a collection of line strings (class
LineString).
A line string has a linear interpolation between points (class Point).
A line (class Line) is a line string with exactly 2 points.
A linear ring (class LinearRing) is a line string that is both closed and simple.
The curve in figure 4.54 - (3) is a closed line string that is a linear ring. The curve
in figure 4.54 - (4) is a closed line string that is not a linear ring.
John Rowley is from the United Kingdom. He is
aChartered Engineer holding a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Until 1980, his major
pre-occupation was the design of Bridges and the
development of associated computer methods with
the status of Principal Engineer in his company. In
1987 he established his own GIS consultancy,
GEOBASE Consultants Limited. In the last decade
the major fields of work have been national, European and international consultancy and standardisation.
During his career Mr. Rowley was encouraged
to establish a department that would develop the
entire flow line from digital survey methods to the computer aided design for
Highways and Bridges. This involved software development as well as pro curement. Successful projects were developed for the UK, Libya, Kuwait, Saudi
Arabia, and others. In particular, new kinds of projects evolved, especially multidisciplinary town planning projects involving GIS methods. Among the numerous projects his consultancy company carried a strategie study into the applicati on of GIS in Police methods for the UK Horne Office or participated in several
studies aimed at improving the Spatial Data Infrastructure in Europe.
Mr. Rowley's several functions in standardisation include the Head of UK
delegation from 1992-2001 and a direct involvement in standards such as ISO
19125, ISO 19128. He was Convener ofISO/TC211 WG 8 dealing with Location
Based Services and the chairman ofthe former TC211/0GC Coordination Group
that has been replaced by a new structure today.
