Cascading Web Map server
A "Cascading Web Map server" is a Web Map service that behaves like a client
of other Web Map services and like a Web Map service to other clients. F or exampIe, a Cascading Web Map serviee can aggregate the contents ofseveral distinct map
servers into one service. Furthermore, a Cascading Web Map server can perform additional functions such as output format conservation of coordinate transformation
on behalf of other servers.
3.5.4 Location based services (ISO 19132 -ISO 19134)
Since the advent of global navigation satellite systems people have been inventing
new applications that combine the online-positioning data with other digital geographie information. The largest family of these products is caHed Location Based
Services (LBS). The term is meant in the broadest possible sense because the sources
of locations are not restricted to satellite navigation systems. The term includes any
technology that delivers the position of a receiver online. For example, today it could
be a ceHular phone that derives its position from the geographie ceH it is momentarily operated in. In one of the simplest applications the received positions are shown
as a red moving dot on a digital map displayed on some hand-held computer. The
positions might be used for further processing on the geographie data. The development of ideas and applications has just started.
The ISO is addressing the growing field of Location Based Services very carefuHy. This is in order to direct the developments towards compliance with the existing 19100 family of standards while at the same time avoiding any restrietions imposed by early standardisation as many new ideas are still emerging that could
change the scope. ISO covers the field with three standards. These are ISO 19132
(Location based services possible standards), ISO 19133 (Location based services
tracking and navigation), and ISO 19134 (Multimodal location based services for
routing and navigation).
3.5.4.1 Trends and overview
The "Location based services possible standards" summarises the present trends
inLBS:
• The Bluetooth consortium develops industry standards for the wireless communication. Their work will result in a change of attitude towards the Internet once it
becomes fuHy available on mobile computers. In the near future, any geographie
information that can be retrieved from the Internet will be available at any place
where a mobile computer can be used.
• An efficient data selection for download has become one of the major concerns
using the Internet. In the near future, local transmission stations wiH automaticaHy
send geographie data of regional interest for downloading on mobile computers.
