Plans for the Coastal Zone
land use etc.
Heritage:- e.g. landscape, historical features, places of interest, landscape and
marine archaeology
Marine Process data:- e.g. tidal flows and current movements, sediment
transportation, navigational engineering information etc.
More traditional topographic mapping, together with complementary digital
map data is available from a number of local and national sources. In Great Britain this
includes specially commissioned material acquired by Local Government and other
public agencies, and commercially supplied information from organisations such as
Bartholomew, The Automobile Association and from OS itself. Typically these
products will include:
Strategic and national mapping:- scales of 1:250,000 to 1:1,000,000 for overview, indexing and national site definition and evaluation
Regional and coastal cell/sub-cell cover:- scales of 1:25,000 to 1:250,000 for
process studies, land cover analysis, Cell and Sub-cell high level management
Local, estuarine, and coastal management unit mapping:- scales of 1:1250 to
1:25,000 for detailed scheme strategy design, implementation and management
monitoring
However, as the widespread Coastal Zone user-community has such a wide
range of specialist needs, satisfying them requires access to a wide portfolio of geotopographic products. In a “best practice” scenario, the ability to focus and customise
this portfolio to meet special interest needs is critical. However, there is also
considerable merit in basing information systems upon topographic material that also
has parallel, often complementary applications in other land-management processes.
This is particularly beneficial where these are operated by the same agencies and/or they
cover related or “close proximity” areas of interest. Here there is significant benefit to
be gained from common technologies, common standards and a common use and
understanding of outputs.
This is where major mapping organisations such as OS can offer a significant
contribution. In UK we have the added advantage that the national mapping agencies,
(Ordnance Survey [of Great Britain] and its counterpart Ordnance Survey Northern
Ireland), offer a full range of integrated geo-topographic products and services from one
agency source. These products are wide ranging. They include detailed “cadastral”
large scales plans based upon surveys at nominal scales of 1:1250 (urban) and 1:2500
(rural), medium scales landscape mapping (typically at scales of 1:10,000 and 1:25,000
to small scale leisure, and general purpose topographic maps in the scale range 1:50,000
to 1,625,000. There are significant benefits from this almost unique situation of a single
source for all mapping needs. The public service status of both agencies’ (OS GB is a
Government Executive Agency) also offers the benefits of full national coverage of all
products and services. OS offers consistency of specification and of underlying
currency, ready availability, and a strong commercial culture that ensures a customerfocused and cost-effective response to special local requirements or customisations.
