and three images acquired between 1.5 and 2 hours after low tide. The separate
application of the same standardized principal components analysis to these two
groups will provide an insight into the evolution of water masses and the process of
estuary drainage during this period immediately after theoretical low tide.
at the theoretical low tide, the Odiel, the Padre Santo channel and the Punta
Umbría channel seem to be occupied by a homogenous mass of water of
medium turbidity which also is beginning to form the corresponding turbidity
plumes in the two outlets of the estuary
the Tinto has not yet started to drain, so its turbidity is at maximum
as time passes the Tinto begins to drain and the turbidity maximum extends
through the upper and central parts of the Padre Santo channel
the turbidity plumes in the two estuary outlets continue to extend and their
contact with coastal waters becomes sharper
the zone parallel to the coastline affected by turbid estuarine water grows
wider
Conclusions : Proposals and Recommendations for Water Sample Collection
The information obtained from the images concerning the estuary dynamics and the
spatial distribution of its water masses in different synoptic situations allows us to draw
a series of conclusions which can be considered useful; recommendations as to how,
where, and when to sample effectively and representatively over a long period. As to
the collection of samples, slight modifications in the procedures used could improve
the quality of the data and facilitate its interpretation.
coastal waters in a broad belt parallel to the coastline are affected by the
presence of the estuary which means that in no way should the samples within
and outwith the estuary be taken on different dates. Therefore it is
recommended that the data be taken as a group and that the whole area be
considered a single zone for purposes of the monitoring plan
the recording of timing and precise location of the sampling in each quarterly
cycle is fundamental to the correct interpretation of the water quality data.
Awareness if the exact tidal phase at sampling time allows the sample to be
related to the distinct water masses within the estuary. Also knowing the time
of collection allows the reconstruction of the route used in relation to general
movement of water masses according to the state of the tide
As to the timing of sampling there are also some observations to be made.
