This chapter presents an analysis of the ecological impacts of the industrial fisheries of
the North Sea.
Published data from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas
and the literature, indicate that the demersal, pelagic and industrial fisheries of the
North Sea fisheries have undergone significant changes during the last two decades.
To examine the potential effect that this might have had on the productivity and
ecological dynamics of the key fish species for human consumption, a multispecies
analysis of diet composition, consumption rates, trophic efficiencies and impacts was
undertaken. The analysis was broken into three historical periods, 1983-85 which was
used to consider the specific diet requirements of human consumption species and the
