The Management Plan Wadden Sea and its Visualisation

among other things, that it should be possible to access these GIS data on a PC without
specialist knowledge. For this purpose it was chosen to use an Arc View application for
distribution. This is an easily accessible GIS programme and is also now freeware.
The GIS data are divided into nine different "views" (see Fig. 3), complete
with symbols and a short manual distributed under the name "Wadden Viewer" among
the authors of the Management Plan of the Wadden Sea. A wider distribution is for not
possible yet for reasons of copyright.
The Wadden Viewer-data can also be used in Arc View 2 or 3.0, by those who
have that at their disposal. Changing the data, however, is not possible in Arc View 1.
So, the users have to pass their analogue revisions on to the North Netherlands
Directorate, where these changes will be processed and distributed again. In this way
the maintenance of the GIS files seems to be assured.
New Initiatives
Every three years a Trilateral Governmental Conference is held by Denmark, Germany
and the Netherlands on the protection of the Wadden Sea. The National Institute for
Coastal and Marine Management (RIKZ) of Rijkswaterstaat has now reworked the
Wadden Viewer-data for use on Internet.
Acknowledgements
Many people co-operated in the process of visualisation of the Management Plan
Wadden Sea. Among them there are three that I want to make special mention to here,
in order of appearance: ing. Y.J. Zijlstra, project leader of the Management Plan; P.G.
Beukema, GIS specialist and H. A. van Wees, cartographer.
