The Role of GIS In EEZ Management

overlooked. However, the role that GIS plays in EEZ management will ultimately
relate to how GIS output is presented to decision makers and subsequently interpreted.
Conclusion
The management of EEZ resources to facilitate sustainable economic development
requires a strategy based on sound information and co-operation between coastal states.
GIS has been identified as having a significant role in achieving effective EEZ
management through the provision of spatial resource information appropriate for
decision making, and through facilitating co-operation and partnership amongst
coastal states. Whilst the usefulness of GIS output ultimately depends on the ability of
decision makers to interpret and respond to issues identified by GIS analysis, this
chapter has highlighted GIS as a key tool in EEZ management and consequently to the
economic development of coastal states.
