Habitat: Attached to stones in flowing,
freshwater habitats.
Description: Plants are often branched
and look like tufts of stiff, dark brown,
or black hair. Individual hairs are
thickened at regular intervals forming
nodes, the diameter of which is less
than 365  µm. Spermatangial sori are
arranged in patches and constricted
rings. Each cell of the male filament
bears a whorl of four small celled laterals and nine short shoots. It is sold as a
foodstuff (Hoek, 1995).

Description: This alga is greenish
black (with a fleshy smell), thread-like,
and branched, with a size ranging
from 5 to 7 cm in length. Thalli of algae
are narrowed abruptly toward the
base, forming a thin cylindrical stalk.
Branches are fasciculate, arcuate, long,
pedicelled, and four in number. Axis
and branches show distinct nodes. This
species is reported to prefer noncalcareous substrates. It is sold as a foodstuff
in India (Bhosale et al., 2012; Sophia
et al., 2009; SBSAC).
