Algae and Plants

Description: It is a nonfilamentous
cyanobacterial species. Colonies of
this species are rigid and show a
rather simple morphology: a bunch
of individual cells, clearly separated
from each other, are embedded in a
globular gel-like matrix. This species has been used as a side dish by
Japanese people from ancient times
(John, 2002).

(= Palmella livida)
Order: Chroococcales
Family: Microcystaceae
Common name: Not available.
Distribution: Europe, Southwest Asia
(AlgaeBase).
Habitat: Growing on limestone in
freshwaters.
Description: It is a unicellular colonial species. Colonies are composed
of groups of cells, which are closed in
mucilaginous, usually wide, and concentrically lamellated envelopes. Cells
are situated in colonies irregularly,
more or less distant from one another,
in old colonies in great numbers.
Mucilaginous envelopes are fine, but
layered and limited. Cells are spherical,
only shortly after division hemispherical, pale blue-green or olive-green,
usually with slightly granular content.
This species may serve as a food supplement (CyanoDB.cz).
