Distribution: Subcosmopolitan in tropical and subtropical seas. Western and
eastern Atlantic Ocean. Mediterranean
and Black Seas. Western and eastern
Indian Ocean. Western central Pacific
(FAO, 2014e).
Habitat: Estuaries and seas.
Description: Body of this species is
elongated and compressed. Head is
large and keeled above. Scales are
small, covering head and body and
bases of fins. Lateral line is almost
straight. Mouth is terminal and lower
jaw is sometimes slightly prominent.
There are two dorsal fins: the first is
short and low, with seven or eight feeble spines connected by a membrane,
and the second is long. Pectoral fins
are short, not reaching to origin of soft
dorsal fin. Anal fin is a little shorter
than the soft dorsal fin with two spines.
Caudal fin is forked, but not deeply so.
Color of back is greenish blue and sides
and belly are silvery. Dorsal and anal
fins are pale green tinged with yellow.
