Tilapia guineensis Günther 1862

Common name: Guinean tilapia.
Distribution: Africa: Senegal to Angola
(Reyes, 1993k).
Habitat: Freshwaters, brackish waters,
and marine waters; rivers.
Description: Upper profile of head of
this species is strongly convex. Mouth
is terminal. A total of 29–30 scales is
seen on lateral line. Outer row teeth are
robust. Dorsal fin has 14–16 spines and
anal fin has 3 spines. Anal fin of this species is gray and the ventral fins are gray
or black and marked by a white line on
the anterior edge. Dorsal fin is gray or
transparent. Caudal fin is bluish gray
and banded with lighter colored spots
and a distinctly shaded upper and lower
portion. This species grows to a length
of 30 cm (Reyes, 1993k).
