Lanistes varicus Müller 1774
Common name: Apple snail.
Distribution: Africa and Madagascar.
Habitat: Irrigation channels, streams
and lakes; inhabits shallow, muddy
pools of river banks.
Description: Snails of this genus have
a hyperstrophic sinistral shell, but the
body of it is dextral. Size of the shell
is 60 × 65 mm. Shell is approximately
globose with evenly curved whorls.
There is a large aperture and wide
umbilicus. Shell color is brown and
unbranded (Brown, 2002).
