CAPTURES BY LINERS AND TRAWLERS IN 1894
557,807, and conger showed a smaller diminution also in both
quantity and value.
The
trawlers
produced 347,827 cwts. of round shes
=£168,136, an increase of 37,965 cwts., and a diminution of
‘
£10,168 on last year’s captures
If no other returns than
those of the liners had been available the irregularity of the
captur‘es of the various forms might have been misunderstood,
_
e.g. that the cod was greatly diminishing.
The trawl, however,
procured 24,840 cwts. of cod more than the previous year, and
an increase of £4,054 ; 17,631 cwts. of haddooks more than in
1893, but with the great diminution of £11,883, showing, as in
the former case, the prevalence of the smaller forms.
Other
kinds of round shes showed considerab1e diminution.
The liners landed 105,244 cwts. of at shes = £59,734,
nearly double the amount (48,095 cwts.) of the previous year,
though the value was only £16,428 more, probably from
increased abundance and
diminished prices.
This total is
'
divided between ordinary at shes (pleuronectids) and skate.
The former amounts to 61,783 cwts. = £49,133 ; an increase of
4,634 cwts. and £5,827 on 1893.
Halibut, ounders, plaice
and brill account for the increase, the larger share of which
1
(£3,143) falls to the former, while £2,783 cover the three latter.
Of skate the total for the year is 43,461 cwts. : £10,601, a
diminution on the previous year of 9,165 cwts. and £124.
Of
_
other kinds of shes 32,149 cwts. = 557,808, or 14,311 cwts. and
fi
£2,918 less than in 1893.
'
The traw1ers caught a less amount of at shes than the
liners, viz. 77,660 cwts., but the value was much greater, viz.
£91,887, a somewhat larger amount by 1,253 cwts. and £1,091
than in 1893.
The total for at shes proper was 71,882 cwts.
=
£90,760, an increase of 857 cwts. and £979 on the previous
year.
The forms in which an_increase occurred were ounders,
plaice, and brill1,099 cwts. and £2,208, and lemon—dabs 667 cwts.
and £1,871.
A diminution of 996 cwts. and £3,327 in turbot
was
the most important on the other side.
Skate showed a
slight increase, viz. 395 cwts. and £112; while other kinds of
shes, as in the case of the liners, were reduced by 16,536 cwts.
and 533,621.
