Abstract
The present work is mainly based on the study and evaluation of the efficacy of three probiotic strains
Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus durans and Psychrobacter cibarius applied in a culture of
Artemia, on the survival rate and growth of nauplii as well as on the control of pathogenic strains:
Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio alginolyticus.
The application of probiotic strains alone on the Artemia culture showed non-significant
improvements on survival rate for E. faecium and P. cibarius at loadings of 10
7 and 10
8 , and a
significant improvement for E. durans at a loading of 10
8 UFC/ml. Concerning the growth parameters
size and total biomass, only E. faecium at 10
8 UFC/ml showed a significant improvement.
The application of probiotic strains for the control of the pathogenic strains V. alginolyticus and V.
anguillarum revealed a significantly positive effect on the survival rate of Artemia in the presence of
V. anguillarum for all three applied strains and a significantly positive effect on the total biomass
when P. cibarius was applied in the presence of V. alginolyticus. The results obtained show that the
strains have an interesting probiotic potential as well as a capacity to control the effect of pathogenic
strains such as Vibrio in an Artemia farm.
