to the higher ambient temperature. Background values with a range of 4-7 ng/mJ
were observed in wooded areas while values on the order of 20-30 ng/mJ were
measured in the surroundings of the main structures and geothermal power
plants.
4.4
Mercury in the Soil
In Fig. 11 the distribution of total mercury concentration in surface soils of the
Amiata district is reported (Bargagli 1990). In the soil, several parameters like
particle size, pH, organic matter and clay content affect mercury retention, but it
is clear that the entire eastern side of Mt. Amiata is very rich in mercury.
Concentrations range from 0.24 to 220 pg/g d.w. The lowest values are still about
three to four times that of the background areas.
