Fig. I. Location of mercury-bearing gas and oil-gas deposists wilhin the Karpinsky lineament J-4
old areas of various age, I Precambrain; 2 Caledonian; 3 Hercynian; 4 Alpine; 5 boundaries between
fold areas of various age; 6 continental rift belts (Rhine-Lybian and Arabian-African); 7 large zones of
transverse dislocations; 8 transverse deep faults; 9 Karpinsky lineament; 10 gas deposits and
occurrences with mercury content in gas over J x 10- <> glm.!

Fig. 2. Seismological section of the area of Zalzvedel-Pekenzen deposit (geotraverse TS-J)
sedimenlary cover; 2 paleozoic folded basement; 3 "granilic" layer; 4 "basaltic" layer; 5 upper mantle;
6 main faults (a known, b proposed); 7 deep faults; 8 gas deposit Zalzvedel-Pekenzen, Altmark,
Germany
Gas deposits of the Stavropol uplift area of the Karpinsky lineament
(Mirnenskoye, Takhta-Kugulta deposits, etc.) could be used as another example.
Here, the mercury content in gases is clearly correlated with an active tectonic
life of the area in modern time - positive and negative tectonic movements,
higher seismicity and large positive anomaly of the heat flow. Finally recent
investigations for measuring mercury content in the near-surface atmosphere
from a moving platform (in a car) by the authors (Ozerova and Mashyanov 1989)
