De nombreuses bactéries dégradant les hydrocarbures sont décrites comme
«non
professionnelles» ou généralistes. Ces bactéries ont un métabolisme capable d'utiliser, en plus
des hydrocarbures, d’autres substrats de croissance. Il existe dans cette catégorie de
nombreuses espèces appartenant aux genres Pseudomonas, Marinomonas, Vibrio et
Pseudoalteromonas.
