M.R. Henzen, South Africa
M.R. Henzen, replying to A. Vivier, stated at the National Institute for Water Research of the
S.A.C.S.I.R. had, in collaboration with the company, conducted tests using lysimeters and irrigation
plots on which black liquors were irrigated on various types of crops. CaSC>4 and ferrous sulphate were
used to ensure optimum drainability of soils. The results showed that lucerne could be grown satisfactorily at TDS concentrations of up to 5000 mg/1. This has now been in practice on a large scale for
more than 2 years. Fields previously destroyed by indiscriminate application of excessive quantities of
highly concentrated liquors have been rehabilitated after application of CaSC>4 and FeSC>4 and controlled irrigation.
