Cost R elationship of Biological and Thermal Processes
545
SUMMARY
Specific BOD reduction costs using selected treatment processes are compared taking
the wastewater from a typical plastics plant as an example.
Partial purification can be performed economically with the aid of a plastic trickling
filter. Extensive purification is best achieved by a combination of the plastic trickling
filter and activated sludge processes. The high-rate activated sludge process is to be
preferred where extremely high degrees of BOD reduction are required as compared with
the activated sludge process.
Incineration is recommended for wastewater concentrations greater than 30,000 to
50,000 mgBODs/1.
