Controls for the entire AEcoS complex are housed in the control room adjacent to the
chamber. They consist of manual controls, mechanically-programmed controllers and
recorders, and a dedicated computer system for automatic control and data acquisition
and processing. Both cam-operated and automatic line-following equipment are utilized
for the mechanical program systems. In this mode, conditions for each parameter must be
developed separately to provide the desired environment. However, with the computer,
conditions are programmed into the system and feedback loops permit more accurate
control than can be attained mechanically.
Environmental parameters, such as temperature, humidity, light intensity and quality,
water flow rate, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity, will be continuously monitored
at several locations along the length of the channel. Other parameters, such as turbulence,
inorganic carbon, organic carbon, or specific ions, will be added as instrumentation is
developed.
DISCUSSION
AEcoS is designed to simulate and study only the chemical and microbial portions of
aquatic ecosystems. Individual chemical species and microbial populations that have been
studied in batch or continuous-flow reactors will be integrated into mixed communities
within the channel where desired environments can be programmed and maintained. Here
interactions, coupling effects, predation, competition, symbiotic relationships, nutrient
requirements, and total system responses can be determined. Thus, rational mathematical
models developed around growth and reaction kinetics can be tested and modified as
required. These same biological communities within the AEcoS can be stressed with single
or multiple pollutants under various environmental conditions to verify their predicted
responses.
