PERIDINIUM IN RESERVOIRS IN CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PARTS OF ISRAEL
Although most of Peridinium settle in the northern reservoirs, large quantities of algal
material enter the closed system and are carried to reservoirs in the central and southern
parts of the country. Fig. 2 shows the distribution of Peridinium in reservoirs along the
INWS in February 1967. In many cases substantial quantities of Peridinium enter closed
reservoirs in the distribution system.

Decomposition of the algae in these reservoirs often causes unpleasant taste and odor and
many complaints from consumers. At present the policy of the Mekoroth Water
Company is to drain and clean these reservoirs after the spring season to prevent this
nuisance. It was estimated that annual cost of this prevention measure is about 200,000
IL(Zak, 1971).
