There should be no viruses in waters that man must consume. This standard should apply equally
to waters derived from natural waters and to renovated waters as well.
Dr. Melnick's reply to Mr. Zohar
In reply to a question by Mr. Zohar I proposed at the University of Illinois Water Quality Conference in 1971 that standards be set for maximum allowable virus in waters for human use. The
suggested amounts were less than one infectious virus unit in 100 gallons of water used for drinking
and less than one infectious virus unit in 10 gallons of water used for recreation. These levels are easily
measured by the technique discussed here today.
