Abstract :
Knowledge of sea states is an essential factor to ensure the economic, safe and sustainable exploitation
of coastal and offshore areas. This thesis presents a detailed evaluation of wave energy along the
Algerian coasts, including both constructive and destructive aspects. Two methodological approaches
have been developed to provide answers to at least two current issues. The first is the significant
increase in electricity consumption in Algeria, combined with global warming problems, the problem
of marine and atmospheric pollution caused by the thermal power stations installed along the Algerian
coast and the need to preserve fuel energy resources. The Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines
(MEM) has developed a national programme that aims to provide 40% of renewable energy in
electricity production by 2030. As part of this programme, several potential areas based on solar,
wind and geothermal energy resources have been identified. This research has shown that the
important solar and wind energy resources are located in the southern Saharan part of the country.
However, according to statistics from the national power generation company (Sonelgaz), more than
40% of electricity is consumed by the coastal provinces, which cover 1.8% of the country. As a result,
and given the continued development of wave energy recuperators in recent years, wave energy,
presented in condensed form of wind energy, is an essential source of renewable energy that can be
used in these high consumption coastal areas. Assessing the propagation of marine energy is a very
important task, not only for its exploitation, but also for its destructive role in coastal areas, which
constitutes a considerable hazard on stormy days. This destructive aspect of wave energies is the
second issue studied in this thesis. The various coastal studies and developments related to the various
marine activities require a detailed study of the wave energy propagation during storm events, both
to ensure sustainable economic design and strengthening of port and coastal protection
infrastructures, and to identify vulnerable coastal areas exposed to high natural risks.
