Abstract
Maritime traffic in Algeria is characterized by an imbalance between imports and exports. Algeria has 10
commercial ports of small and medium size. With a total annual traffic of 80 million tons. About 10,000 ships
visit Algerian ports every year. We present here a study on the role of maritime traffic in the introduction of
potentially harmful and / or non-native species in the port of Bejaia (Algeria). Samples were taken from the
ballast water of the "OHIO NASSAU" ship from France, and these samples were subjected to different sets of
phytoplankton identification.
We identified 12 phytoplankton species among which 2 harmful / toxic taxa were reported: such as Alexandrium
sp. and Dinophysis acuminata Several factors were examined, including marine traffic, and the age of ballast
water. Our analyzes revealed that species abundance decreased with age of ballast water, possibly due to species
mortality due to length of trip and lack of ballast light.
This study is the second conducted in Algeria and the first in a port in the center of the country, it should allow
to establish the basics of biological monitoring of ballast water to regularly assess potential species introductions
and their long-term effects on the marine biodiversity of the Algerian basin. A biological monitoring protocol for
ballast water is proposed as part of the present work.
Keywords: Maritime traffic, ballast water, port of Bejaia, invasive species.
