2
/an
Abstract:
The creation of monthly climatology of physico-chemical parameters (T, S, O 2 , NO 3 ,
PO 4 , Si (OH 4 ) from the database MEDAR / MEDATLS, (2002) in the Algéro- provençal basin,
has allowed us to track the decennial evolution of the biogeochemical and hydrological
characteristics of the waters in the western basin since the 50's.
A significant increase in sea surface temperatures of about 0.8 ° C was observed in
the whole algerian- provencal basin.
An increase of nutrients concentrations in surface and deep water in response to the
increase of terrigenous and anthropogenic inputs has resulted in an increase in f ratio in the
80s and 90s.
We have calculated the new production (NP) and the shallow remineralization from
phosphate and oxygen data. NP results are approximately 34.3 mgC/m
2
/j. the
remineralization ratio is about 77.74% of the new production in subsurface. The primary
production calculated from chlorophyll data is 256 gC/m
2
/yr on average.
The modeling of pCO 2 and TCO 2 using a semi-prognostic model, (LOUANCHI et al,
1996) allows us to see that anthropogenic carbon has invaded subsurface water of the
algero- provencal basin by 48.7 µmol/l since the 50's . Finally the algerian- provençal water
is a sink for atmospheric CO 2 .
Key words: Basin algerian- provencal basin, decadal variations, CO 2, nutrients, exported
production.
