Mangrove area: Data are largely derived from the World
Mangrove Atlas ISpalding et al, 19971.
No. of mangrove species: WCMC data, largely taken from tfie
World Mangrove Alias, witti updates.
No. of seagrass species: Tfiese figures are likely to be
conservative. Ttiey have been derived from a database under
development at UNEP-WCMC Records of species distribution
have been incorporated into this database from over 60
sources, primarily published books and papers. In a number
of cases, reviewers have pointed out that true totals are likely
to be higher In cases where a clearly documented figure was
provided, the data were amended accordingly

BIBLIOGRAPHY
Every chapter concludes with a bibliography which includes
many of the sources used in the compilation of the texts, as
well as additional reference materials which may be seen
as further reading. In addition to these sources the authors
relied heavily on gray literature and the Web for recent
material.
PROTECTED AREAS IN THE DATA TABLES
Within the UNEP-WCMC protected areas database, sites
known to include coral reefs are further annotated and it is
these sites only which have been incorporated into the data
tables. Alongside the site name and designation a designation
abbreviation is provided Ithis abbreviation is used on the
mapsl. The lUCN management category is also provided,
giving an indication of the legal regime protecting the site.
This does not always equate with management effectiveness.
The following provides a short summary of the lUCN
management categories, while more detailed information can
be found at:
http://www.unep-wcmc.org/protected_areas/categories/
index.html:
la: Strict Nature Reserve; protected area managed mainly
for science
lb: Wilderness Area; protected area managed mainly for
wilderness protection
II:
National Park: protected area managed mainly for ecosystem protection and recreation
III:
Natural Monument; protected area managed mainly for
conservation of specific natural features
IV: Habitat/Species Management Area: protected area
managed mainly for conservation through management
intervention
V; Protected Landscape/Seascape: protected area managed
mainly for landscape/seascape conservation and for
recreation

there are likely to be oversights. The authors would welcome feedback le-mail: informationldunep-wcmc.orgl,
