Abstract:
Seabirds constitute an important compartment of marine biocenoses and their study represents an
essential link in the understanding of their functioning. Our study concerns the enumeration of
seabirds on part of the coast of the wilaya of Tipaza. It was carried out at 5 sites covering the
entire coast of the wilaya and was based on the use of digital photographs taken between January
to March 2020. The results obtained made it possible to count 2229 individuals spread over 14
species. , belonging to 6 families and 2 orders. The most abundant species are the brown gull
(45%) of the population; followed by the black-headed gull (40%). The Shannon indices and
fairness, estimated at 1.5 and 0.6, respectively, indicate a significant imbalance in the
distribution of the workforce. Specifically, two of the species contacted have a particular
conservation status, namely the Audouin's Gull (Larus audouinii), an endemic Mediterranean
species (threatened) and the Common Curlew (Numenius arquata), a declining species. This first
counting approach revealed the interest of the approach which must be generalized; but also the
richness of the western Algiers coast in terms of biodiversity and the need to put in place
measures for protection and sustainable management.
