Corphaena hippurus is usually caught with different methods,
such as floating longlines, xed nets, trolling lines and surrounding
nets.
,
This species is mostly piscivorous feeding, mainly on ying—
sh and cephalopods, found below the shadows of oating objetcs
(FISHER, 1971).
Because of the lack of information concerning the biology of
C.
hz‘ppurus in libyan coastal waters, the aim of this study was
therefore to investigate the species biology primarily its food and
feeding habits.

MATERIALS and METEODS
.
Specimen of C. hippurus were collected twice a week from
the coastal area delimited by Tripoli harbor and the beach of the town
of Janzur (g. 1). This area was about 13 Km in length a long the

coast, 2—3 Km in width from the shore, and up to 50 m water depth.
The collection was carried out between late August and November of
1981, and
from late August throught November of 1982. This
collection period in each year war chosen because it is the only period
during wich this species is abundant in Tripoli coasts.
Two
different
types of sampling

and trolling lines. In the latter, two different ’
articial baits (rooster feathers and stainless steel spoons') were used.

All
specimen were caught under articial shades (oats) during xed
periods ofthe day (early morning and late .afternoon).
The rst type was constructed from closely packed palm-tree
leaves, nailed on a wooden—triangular frame (1,5 X 1,5 ‘x‘

their{ leàets hanging down into the water (Fig ZA). The second type
of a large, strong.plàstic bag (100 x 50 x 25 cm) lles with

individually to the bottom by heavy weights attached to a rope 30—50
m in length. A cork was attached to the rope 3 meters away from the
main oat to prevent it from sinking by water
