ABSTRACT
Coryphczena hip]ll"llb‘ is an important sh in the local
tishmarkets
because
it
is
rankes as a second—class tish after -
Epine/2h61… and Pagellus species. 1ts presence in enormous number
in
Tripoli coastal water during the fishing season (August —
November) can support a good sh marketing. There was no previous
work concerning the biology of C. 'hippîll”llS from the libya‘n waters,
therefore, the aim of
study was to investigate some aspects ofthe
food and feeding behaviour of this:important sh. The food and
feeding behaviour of C. hippurus in'Tripoli coasts were studied from
a total of 1061 individuals caught during the shing Seasons îOf 1981
and 1982.
The tishwas caught by surrounding nets and trolling lines;
however the rst one was mostly used in this study. Specime were
collected under articial shades used by local tishermen.

Comm/mena hz}9purus appears in Tripoli
by late
August, reached its maximum abundance during September
for 1981, and 72,54% for 1982 of the total individuals caught),
decreased by novembre (10,80 % for 1981 and 038% for—1982) and
disappeared completelyby January.
