Figure 5: The GIS system "EAS'y Software" facilitate a drawing the water quality profile
along the Study area.
Conclusion and Recommendations
It is clear from the above discussion that the range
magnitude of environmental
issues affecting the Nile delta coastal area are considerable and that pressures on this
ecosystem are likely to increase with time as a result of population expansion and the
demands of economic development. Science has an important part to play in moderating
these effects by facilitating informed decision making.
In particular, it can assist in
providing a quantitative framework for the assessment of ecological impact and risk, the
sustainable
management of economically important renewable resources, and the '
conservation
of
the
area‘s
rich
habitat
and
Wildlife heritage. Improved scientific
understanding and resulting recommendations in. turn provide a means of equitably
resolving frequently encountered problems=of conflicting use of the coastal area. It
provides a, rational basis for sectoral planning and facilitates'both the formulation and
implementation of policy «and legislation emphasizing sustainable development. However,
the effectiveness of scientific advice and resultant management decisions will ultimately
be determined by the extent and quality of underlying information onwhich it is based.
The immediate objective of this paper was to develop an integrated, GIS-based,
information system for routine monitoring of the Nile Delta coastal area, to apply it in an
operational sense to effectively address problems of Water quality and natural resource
management in the region, and to establish the necessary user—base and technical
expertise to ensure local self—sufciency and thus continuity in its usage.
This paper provides a strategy for the c0llection, collation, harmonization, analysis
and evaluation of information on coastal water quality and usage, and the temporal and
spatial evolution of environmental indicators. Monitoring the Changes occurring within the
coastal environment will facilitate detection of adverse impacts, sUch as erosion and
pollution, identify alterations in land Use, and give early warning and assess damage
caused by economic activities, and observe natural variability
