Cellulase activity in the digestive tract of two cyprinids, the Amur carp,
Ctenopharyngodon idella, and the goldfish, Carassius auratus, has been esti—
mated by the technique of Miller et al. (1960) in fish living at 20 and 28°C.
A control batch of rainbow trout,
Salmo gairdneri, was kept in the same tank
as
the
cyprinids at 20°C; both species were fed the same diet, i.e. mainly
pellets with a high cellulose content (18%) and a daily amount of plants.
Whatever
the animal Species or the rearing temperature, cellulase activity
was
always low
10 cellulase units). This activity, independent of the
possible food preferences of the fish, differed from the activity measured
in the water of rearing systems, which was always zero. Counts of the hetero—
trophic bacterial flora (aerobic and facultative anaerobic), the proteolytic
flora, and the amylolytic and cellulolytic flora, were worked out simultane—
ously. Whilst the densities of proteolytic and amylolytic flora were closed
to
that of heterotrophic flora (108 bacterial bodies/g digestive tract), that
of
cellulolytic flora was always very low (< 103 b. b./g) in Amur carp, and
zero
in goldfish. In no case, did the bacterial flora ensure a cellulase
function in the species studied. The low activities measured seemed to be
linked to food absorption.
EFFECTS OF SUB—LETHAL CONCENTRATIONS OF PESTICIDES ON FEEDING ENERGETICS AND

In the present investigation two types of pesticides were used namely Coroban
(Chlorophyriphas) and Decis (Pyrethroid) which are very commonly used
in
agricultural operations, and their effects on survival, growth and body
composition (protein, lipid and carbohydrates) in the commercially important
common
carp,
Cyprinus carpio, were studied. The concentration of Decis, with
which no mortälify_of carp was observed even after 96—hr eXposure, was
0.002 ppm (Sublethal). The LC50
value for 96—hr exposure, was 0.003 ppm for
Decis and 0.27 ppm for Coroban. Survival studies indicate that Decis had more
effect than Coroban. Food consumption of
was
decreased with the
increasing sublethal concentration of Decis and Coroban. It was 15.6 mg dry
food/g live fish/day When the fish were reared in pesticide—free water, but
the fish consumed only 6.7 and 7.1 mg/g fish/day when grown in a sublethal
concentration of Decis
(0.002 ppm) and Coroban (0.25 ppm) respectively. The
