SUMMARY
After a description of the systems of goldfish farming in Italy, the au—
thor reports on production and marketing of goldfish and crucian carp in Ita—
ly in 1980—1984. The survey showed a regular rate of production and market—
ing
between
1960 and
1965, followed by a sudden increase of production that
in 1970 reached more than 22 million fish.
This same maximum was marketed in
1975 and represents the largest quantity of fish sold in the period 1960—1984.
Since 1975 production and marketing has dropped and in 1980 it fell to about
13 million.
In the following four years a slight increase in production brou—
ght the volume to nearly 15 million in 1984. The fish farms are concentrated
in the districts of Bologna, Ferrara and Modena. The average farming area is
about 8 ha.
Forty percent of the total area (165 ha) is devoted to goldfish
and crucian carp monoculture with an average production ranging from 65,000
to
200,000 fish/ha; a lower production is obtained in polyculture with catfish,
Carp and tench.
The product is marketed in Italy and abroad. In 1980 and 1984
sales in Italy exceeded exportation to any European country.
poisson chat, carpe, tanche.
