Now, as formerly, tench is an interesting by—fish in pond carp culture and
a
demanded fish for open waters. However, as compared with the major species
of fish cultured in Europe (trout, common carp or herbivorous fish), there
is a lack of information. Only recently have some investigators started
to deal more thoroughly with this species.
Breeding programs designed to improve the tench genotype are scarcely known.
With the tench genetic material available at present, a three—year cycle
of production is generally required to achieve marketable size. Since tench
are
not as domesticated as carp, considerable genetic differences between
the various strains are to be expected. The example of the "Quolsdorf" tench
shows that tench growth can be considerably improved by mass—selection and
the production cycle reduced to 2 years. In the future, modern methods of
population genetics and hybridization, as well as of gene technology, must
be applied. Research in this field should have practical application and
lead to more successful and economical tench aquaculture.
