SUMMARY
The tench (Tinca tinca L.) has long been the most important by—fish in
convential
European pond carp farming. It grows slower than carp but is con—
sidered to be more resistant. Semi—controlled reproduction of tench is com—
mon.
Spawning time (Nay to August) is highly dependent on climatic condi—
tions (ZZ—25°C). Ripe females and males (300—500 9) are stocked separately
in spawning ponds or together with 2 to 3-year old carp. The small, stickly
eggs are released in batches and affiw to submersed vegetation. The tiny lar—
vae
hatch within about 3 days. Artificial propagation is carried out because
of the unreliable results of natural reproduction. Under hatchery conditions,
ovulation is induced by injecting carp pituitary gland extract. The stripped
eggs are treated with carbamide and salt for fertilizati0n and with tannin
to prevent stickiness before incubation in glass jars. Tench larvae start
feeding after 5—6 days. The first food organisms must be very small (proto—
zoa, rotifers). After the nursing period (5-6 weeds) the fry should not be
reared together with carp fry during the first summer on account of identi—
cal natural food resources.
In polyculture management during the following
yeras, the tench population should always be one year older than the carp
population in the same pond in order to reduce competitive feeding.
