SUMMARY.
Ln modern Indian aquaculture, called composite fish culture, traditional
polyculture of the major Indian carps, catla Catla catla, rohu Labeo rohita,
mrigal Cirrhinus mrigala, and calbasu Labeo calbasu, has been substituted by
a
system in which these indigenous Gangetic species are cultured together with
Chinese silver and grass carps and the common carp,
each species occupying a
distinct ecological niche in the pond. Hypophysation, which is also being
applied for sympathetic mass—breeding to India's traditional "Bundh—type—
tanks" is now the mainstay of seed—fish production for which hatcheries of
diverse description, ranging from table—top glass—jar design to Chinese circu—
lar cemented tanks to portable polythylene system, have been established.
Nursery, rearing and stock pond management practices include adoption of pre—
stocking measures to effect: l) predatory and weed—fish and other unwanted pond
biota control by application of toxicants most1y of plant origin; 2) pond
manuring by treated sewage, cattle waste, etc. and chemical fertilizer appli—
cation; and 3) micro— and macro—aquatic vegetation control through biological
and chemical methods. Post—stocking practices cover adoption of steps for
sustaining pond fertility by additional fertilization accompanied by supple—
mentary feeding. Composite fish culture, tried in India's diverse agro—climatic
zones
from 1962 onwards, seeks to raise per hectare per year yield from the
earlier India's average of about 600 kg to 1.5 T—10.0 T.
