The typical earthen,
standing water pond used for freshwater fish polycul—
ture may be divided into 3 interrelated zones:
1.
air/water interface; 2.
water column;
and, 3. water/sediment interface. The influx of solar energy
and
the efficiency of its utilization limits photosynthetic production
to
<12 gm carbon/sq m/day.
The transfer of gases across zone 1, appears to be
limited by diffusion across a
micron thick laminar boundary layer.
In
the
2nd
zone,
the planktonic food web develops with
interactions
anong
particulate
organic
matter,
adsorption
of dissolved organic
matter
on
solids
suspended
from the bottom,
and the feeding habits of
filter
and
particulate feeding target aninals.
In the 3rd zone,
the redox
potential
drops
to
negative values in the upper 1 mm,
nitrogen and phosphorus
are
recycled,
crude matter is converted into microbial cells plus the 2 to
10
times more abundant microbial exudates°
zones:
l)l'interface air—eau; 2) la colonne d'eau; 3) l'interface eau—sediments. A
la
surface,
la lumiere penetre pour stimuler la
photosynthese,
diffuse,
L'elevation
du
rapport
surface de fond/eau est souvent
associee
a
une
aUgmentation des rendements en poissons.
