The physicalfchemical characteristics of the enVironment and the variations
in the abundance and evaluation of the bioùaSs to be narvested in cyprinid
rearing ponds were studied. These date provide some référencé points
comparing the yield of zooplanktom prey in other conditions. The protein and
amino acid compositions of this biomass was studied in relation to the
tary requirements of some species such as carp. Practical methods of collect—
ion, transport, stocking, sorting by class size and utilization.by
nisms for the breeding of cyprinid larvae and a1evins are described.

Two recirculatibn bioassays were conducted for 158 hours each
the median lethal concentration (LCSO) of common carp
for different exposure time. In the first trial duplicate groups of carp fry
(299 mg, SE_ 14.2) were exposed to seven concentrations of ammonia. The
and
168—h LC50's for exposure to unionised ammonia were 1.76 (95% CQL.
1.67 —
1.85),i…74 (95% C.L. 1.65—1.84) and 1.64_(95% C.L. 1.53 —1.76) mgl'1
respectively. In the second trial siùilarly duplicate groups for fry (206 mg,
SEÎ 8.4) were exposed to seven concentrations of ammonia. The 48—, 96— and
168—h LC50's of unionised ammonia were 1.87 (95% C.L. 1.82—1.93, 1.84 (95%
C-L. 1.78—1.91)_and 1.78 (95% C.L. 1.71—1.86) mgl“1 respectively. Acute
,
_tOxicity ceased after 24 and 48 hours respectively in first and second trials
_
Ïahd the two 96—h LC50 values obtained were not significantly different.
