8. Applications of Groundwater Quality Models
ment of water resources. These contents will not be discussed in this book
and those interested may refer to the books written by Haimes et al. (1975),
Haimes (1977), Haimes and Tarvainen (1981), Chankong and Haimes (1983).
Friedman et al. (1984) also gave an overall review on models of this kind.
Exercises
8.1. Use a flow chart to describe the procedure of building a groundwater
quality model.
8.2. Formulate a one-dimensional model to simulate mass transport in a
saturated-unsaturated zone along the vertical direction. Then, design a
flow chart to describe its solution procedure when the FDM is used.
8.3. From the point of view of two-phase flow, derive the governing equations for mass transport in the unsaturated zone.
8.4. Use a numerical method to solve the problem of mass transport in a
single fracture presented in Section 3.2.4.
8.5. Design a water quality management problem which may be met in
practice.
8.6. Assuming that the remediation cost is proportional to the pumping and
the recharging rates q+ and q- in Eq. (8.3.42), use the influence matrix
method to transform the remediation problem defined by Eqs. (8.3.42) to
(8.3.44) into a mathematical programming problem that can be solved
iteratively by Linear Programming.
