Mathematical models have many advantages compared with the others.
They can reflect complex physical structures and irregular geometrie shapes
of an aquifer system; they are convenient and flexible to use and easy to
calibrate; and they can describe not only the phenomena of water flow in
porous media but also the mass and energy transports and other complex
physical-chemical-biological phenomena in porous media. Therefore, mathematical modeling has become the major tool of basin studies. Table 1.1
shows its major applications.
Each one of the mathematical models in Table 1.1 consists of a set of
partial differential equations (PDE) with appropriate initial and boundary
conditions. The equations describe the characteristics of the system and
the physical-chemical processes going on in it. The initial and boundary
conditions represent the system's initial state and its relationships with
the surrounding systems. Mass and heat transport models couple the flow
model with the solute mass conservation equation, and energy conservation
equation, respectively. The model of media deformation couples the flow
model with the equation expressing the skeletal strain. Generally, these
mathematical models are very complex, and computers must be used to solve
them.
There are two kinds of distributed parameter models in the simulation of
groundwater quality: pure advection and advection-dispersion. The pure
