As seen in Fig. 8.35, degradation of elastin through UV damage has been shown
to be suppressed by sargachromenol compounds.
The author has found the phlorotannin compound 7-phloroeckol (isolated from
E. cava) to strongly inhibit synthesis of tyrosinase and melanin. In addition to using
it to develop functional whitening ingredients, the Jeon et al. also found dieckol to
suppress wrinkles by blocking DNA damage from UV rays (Figs. 8.35–8.37).
Dieckol has also been shown to be effective against the inflammatory skin
condition atopy. In animal models with induced atopy, treatment with E. cava
extract containing dieckol showed outstanding effects in relieving atopy, as shown
in Fig. 8.37.
Ingredients in red algae extracts have been shown to have skin moisturizing,
antioxidant, UV protection, and hair growth promotion effects. As shown in
Fig. 8.38, extract from the Indonesian red alga Eucheuma cottonii was found to
have hair growth effects comparable to those of the hair loss medication Minoxidil.
