Offensive odors may be detected in areas adjacent to industries, and vary
according to the type of industries involved. Some examples of industrial
sources of malodors include:
pulp mills, which release hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), causing ‘‘rotten-egg’’ type
odors
oil refineries, due to H 2 S and mercaptans
some chemical plants, due mainly to use of aniline or organic solvents
food processing plants
iron and metal smelters, which emit acidic smells
phosphate fertilizer manufacturing plants
