On the Cover
The cancer death rates in the U.S. increased steadily from 1950 to the middle of the 1990s, when the
increase began to slow down. Important differences are found between cancer death rate from all
causes and the cancer death rate from respiratory system failure. For example, between 1950 and
1990, the increase in cancer death rate from all causes was about 70%, while it was over 500% for
respiratory system cancer death rate. The marked increase stresses the important role played by
exposure to increasing levels of air pollution (p. 26).
