17 Vibrational Microspectroscopy for Analysis of Atherosclerotic Arteries

is a comparison between atherosclerotic rabbits of different age (2 and 6 months)
and with or without L-arginine supplement in the diet, which was confirmed to be
beneficial in disease prevention as also indicated by other techniques. the semiquantitative results show that the lipid deposits increase with age but decrease with
L-arginine supplementation. Additionally, by using Principal Component Analysis
(PCA) spectral profiles assigned to elastin, lipid deposits and a cryoprotectant were
reported. moreover, two different protein profiles were found in the tissues as given
by PCA.
the second comparison [63] was done on transgenic mouse models: singleknockout ApoE
−/−
and double-knockout ApoE

iNoS

. the aim was to determine
the influence of inducible Nitric oxide Synthase (iNoS) on the atherosclerotic
plaque composition and the structure of the wall itself. Tunica media was found not
