Now, following the above-mentioned procedure, let us draw normal to each
plane (line in 2D) mentioned above and mark a point on each normal at a distance
1/d hk0 , where d hk0 is the interplanar spacing for the planes {hk0}. Here, the normal
OA to the (100) plane defines a*-axis and the normal OB to the (010) plane defines
b*-axis, respectively. Further, in general, to reach any reciprocal lattice point hk0,
we have to travel h units along a*-axis and k-units along b*-axis. This way, we can
generate the reciprocal lattice net as shown in Fig. 2.13.
Example 2 The primitive translation vectors of a two-dimensional lattice are a = 2 ^ i
+ ^ j and b = 2 ^ j. Determine the primitive translation vectors of its reciprocal lattice.
Solution: Given: a = 2 ^ i + ^ j and b = 2 ^ j. Let us assume the third translation vector c of
the given lattice lies along the z-axis and it has a unit magnitude, that is, c = ^ k.
Therefore, the volume of the unit cell is
