Foreword By Peijian Ye
The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth. It is not only the start point of deep
space exploration, but also the focus of all space countries. Along with development
of China’s Deep Space Exploration Program, the Chang’E-1 orbiting the Moon was
implemented in 2007 and lunar soft-landing of Chang’E-3 was implemented in 2013.
There will be lunar sample and return in the future.
After landed on surface of celestial bodies, exploration in short distance will help
to learn the celestial body more clearly and deeply. At the same time, it is also
possible to observe the solar system and other celestial bodies with unique location
and environment on the body. There are lunar exploration, observation of the Earth
and space in mission objectives of lunar soft-landing exploration.
It is not easy for a lunar lander to be launched on Earth and landed on lunar
surface. The lunar lander shall be landed stably on lunar surface after a long journey
of 389 thousand kilometers. It shall adapt to different lunar terrain and soft lunar soil,
as well as environment on lunar surface such as lunar dust, temperature alternation
in lunar day and night. A series of new technologies shall be broken through for
the lunar lander. The implementation of lunar soft-landing is an important mark of
aerospace technology level.
The book “Technology of Lunar Soft Lander” is the first book for systematic and
deep introduction of lunar lander technology in China. The editors of this book are
young and middle-aged scientists and engineers who I am familiar with and thinking
highly. Some of them participated in the development of Chang’E-1 with me in
the beginning of twenty-first century, and then participated in the development of
Chang’E-2 and Chang’E-3. They are important ones working on front line of CLEP,
who have solid theoretical foundation and rich engineering experience. The design
methodology, typical technology, and verification methodology based on engineering
practice of Chang’E-3 mission are systematically described in this book including
environment, system design, subsystem design, AIT, and ground test.
The book “Technology of Lunar Soft Lander” can provide technology reference
for aerospace scientists and engineers in lunar and deep space exploration, as well
as related knowledge for researchers in colleges and institutes. The publication will
