2.4.2 Lunar Topography
Lunar mare and upland are covered with rocks and craters in different size and shape.
Craters are the ring pits that can be found everywhere on the Moon, including the ring
mountain, the radiating ridge and the rise feature. Figure 2.5 is the first picture taken
by the Chang’E-3 lunar lander after landing. Large amounts of rocks and craters can
be found in the picture. The slope, the rocks and the craters of the landing site may
have impact on the soft-landing and operation on lunar surface.
1. Distribution of Slope on Lunar Surface
The changes of average slope of lunar surface according to the variation of baseline for
different topography is shown in Fig. 2.6. There are two major characteristics of the
distribution of slope: the first is that the standard deviation of the average distribution
