Soft-landing on celestial body is an important approach to explore the mystery of
the universe by human beings. Compared with Earth artificial satellite and circumlunar lunar spacecraft, there were a great many new technologies in system design,
Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC), propulsion, landing cushion, and thermal
design of lunar lander. There were also a lot of ground verification and validation
tests to be conducted.
On the basis of mission success of Chinese Chang’E-3 lunar lander, the design
and development technology of lunar lander are summarized in the book. There are
17 chapters. In chapters 1–3, there is system introduction for history of lunar exploration, mission and environment of lunar lander, system design of lunar lander. In
chapters 4–11, there is design of important subsystems including structure and mechanism, thermal control, power supply, GNC, propulsion, On-Board Data Handling
(OBDH), Tracking, Telemetry and Command (TT&C) and telecommunication and
landing gear. In chapters 12–15, there is technology of Integration and Assembly, test,
verification and validation, including Integration and Assembly, metrology, electrical
test, and validation. In chapter 16, the instrumentation technology of lunar lander is
introduced. In chapter 17, there is future prospect of lunar lander technology.
