6.3.6 China
The Research and Development Center for Aerospace Systems of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences is the main institution in China involved in high altitude
ballooning and airship development. The Academy of Opto-Electronics created
the Lighter-Than-Air Vehicle Center in 2005. It runs programs to develop high
altitude balloon systems, tethered balloon platforms, and stratospheric airships.
The Institute of Optoelectronics may have established a balloon test and launch
facility in the Xilin Gol autonomous region of Inner Mongolia. If so, this author
was unable to find any information about its precise location and its facilities.
