5.2 WORLD VIEW ENTERPRISES
World View Enterprises, Inc., is a private American near-space exploration and
technology company headquartered in Tucson, AZ which was founded with the
goal of increasing access to, and the utilization of the stratosphere for scientific,
commercial and economic purposes.
World View was founded and incorporated in 2012 by a team of aerospace and
life support veterans that included Biosphere-2 crewmembers Jane Poynter and
Taber MacCallum, Alan Stern (the principal investigator of the New Horizons
mission to Pluto) and NASA ex-astronaut Mark Kelly. It designs, manufactures
and operates stratospheric balloon flight technology for a range of applications
and customers.
World View’s businesses include:
• Government services: Provide critical data to government entities worldwide to undertake persistent surveillance and reconnaissance of areas of
interest as well as to position communications relays or other specialized
sensors in the stratosphere.
• Industrial inspection: Provide critical real-time data to large organizations
and corporations that maintain complex and expansive infrastructure for
site planning, asset monitoring, inspection, and multiple layers of security
assurance and performance analysis.
• Transportation: Provide data-driven applications for businesses and municipalities who use mapping and sensor data to track maritime and land transportation
and improve logistics. Balloon-borne data provides a unique crucial perspective
as part of an overall mapping and monitoring ecosystem that is deployed by
clients to capture, analyze, annotate, and make strategic decisions.
• Communications: Provide a cost-efficient, persistent tool for communications data acquisition and infrastructure that monitors either internal processes or mandated government asset inspection.
• Custom payloads: Partner with commercial businesses and government
entities to deploy secure, custom payloads into the stratosphere in months
or even weeks.
5.2.1 Stratollites
In the World View approach to sending payloads to the stratosphere, the payload
is stored in a “Stratocraft” and powered by solar panels and rechargeable batteries
for night flight.
