cient recovery of small appliances requires innovation, Lynette Japan has been taking on the challenge by collaborating with a home delivery company.
By around 2050, mankind will be bidding farewell to the era of metal mining,
and transitioning to a society where metals excavated in the past will be recycled
(Fig. 15).
Renewable Energy
A situation in which renewable energy sources such as hydro, wind, and solar power
have become the most economical choices for building new power plants has begun
to emerge in various parts of the world (Fig. 16). Emerging from an era of safe and
secure but expensive energy, we now find that renewable energy can compete with
fossil resources and nuclear power on price. Since innovations will occur in the
renewable energy sector, the price competitiveness of renewable energy is likely to
further increase in the future.
All renewable energies, except for geothermal and tidal, are a form of solar
energy. The amount of energy from sunlight that hits the Earth is 10,000 times more
than we need. Since it is practically infinite and the cost to harvest its energy has
already become the cheapest among energy sources, there is no doubt that renewable energy will become the energy of the future.
In fact, it is likely that Japan will enter an era where renewable energy will be the
norm before 2030.
The Internet has replaced centralized information systems, and both convenience
and robustness have increased. As a clean, safe, robust, cheap, abundant, sustainable, and therefore, secure energy source, renewable energy will become the core of
the energy system in the future, projected to occur by 2050.
